Albania

About my visit to Mysterious Albania

The Adriatic Sea is the most unknown country in Europe. Perhaps her communist past has something to do with it. Meanwhile, the Balkan country wakes up and wants to surrender its secrets. Whether Albania is still mysterious, I’ am adventurous and travelled from north to south.

Located on the Adriatic Sea is perhaps the most unknown country in Europe. Perhaps this has to do with what has all been here in the communist past. The Balkan country is waking up and wants to give its secrets to it. Is Albania still a secret or not?

Tirana busts

Tirana’s capital of Albania is only 4 hours flying from Brussels. Here we start our tour. The statue of Skanderberg shows on a square in the middle of the city. Nearby is the historic museum, a mandatory stop for anyone visiting “The Land of the Eagles”. The city is full of the hip restaurants and there is a lively atmosphere everywhere.

Once again, it was different during the communist period of leader Hoxha who closed his country and helped to abyss. Fortunately, this dictatorship ended in 1992 and since then Albania has done it’s the most to develop into a modern, contemporary country. Yet there is still a long way to go. The traces of her dark past have not yet been erased.

Shkodër: one of the oldest cities in Europe

A small local bus took us north to the city of Shkodër. The lake is picturesque beautiful and is partly in Montenegro. The Ebu Cup mosque in the center of the city is a gem. Just outside the city’s edge is the Shkoder showpiece: the Rozafa Castle. Due to its high location, it offers a beautiful view of Lake Shkodra. Here you can smell the atmosphere from the Ottoman era. In this region we hear stories of the Blood Revenge. This tradition has resurrected since the fall of communism. Different people do not dare to get out of fear from being killed. This is because of the Kanun, a law that states that a murder must be wrecked by shedding the blood of the killer or his children.

Unspoiled nature in the Alps

The north of Albania is a hiking paradise. The nature parks of Valbona and Theth are fabulously beautiful, a playground for the mountain lover. This area is unspoiled and we also enjoyed this beautiful spectacle of nature. You can only reach the village of Theth during the summer months via a bad dirt road with a 4 × 4 jeep. The residents are very hospitable and offer visitors a nice local meal. The trip from Valbona to Theth is not an easy walk but a must. The highest peaks are between 2600 and 2700 m. The unspoilt nature in the heart of the Alps speaks volumes.

City of 1000 windows

A visit to Berat is a must. This place is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Historic Berat lies on the banks of the Osum River. The history has been well preserved here and is characterized by the typical houses built against the mountain edge. The Mangalem district has numerous small charming alleys and streets, but mainly with the Barat Castle. We enjoyed the view above. Berat is 4000 years old and escaped from major devastation. It was also a city of craftsmen and traders. The traditional houses with the many windows are mainly built in the 18th and 19th centuries and symbolize the city life in the Balkans at that time.

Ottoman Pearl

Those who want to catch up with more history can get their heart in Gjirokaster. The streets are steep and partly renovated. Like in Berat, Gjirokaster also has its own castle and the city is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you walk here, you feel like discovering even more Albanians.

Sun Sea Beach

Because of its beautiful sandy beaches, Sarande is called “The Pearl of Albania.” In the southwest of the country are the most beautiful seaside resorts. Here you do not notice mass tourism like in Croatia. Sarande located on the Ionian Sea is not far from the border with Greece. Right across Sarande we see the island of Corfu. There is a daily ferry service.

Breathtaking archaeological site

The Greek border is close to this historic wonder. This ancient Illyrian city has been in the hands of the Greeks, Romans and Venetians for centuries and has been part of the Byzantine Empire. In this ancient city there is a 6th century basilica, an acropolis and a Venetian castle. In this extensive site your eyes fail to look so much interesting things together.

Albania is waiting for you. Albania is not an expensive country at all. In recent years, a lot has been changed in a positive way. The country is ready to be discovered! The fascinating mix of nature and history makes it the perfect destination for the curious traveler.

Hier beginnen we onze rondreis.
